Georgia’s Paddock Nebbiolo
Two hectares of Nebbiolo, planted in 1991. A variety that requires more vineyard work to maintain yet we love the result. Not an Italian Nebbiolo, we are in Heathcote after all.

Bright crimson colour, powerful floral bouquet of violet and rose, rounded off with a red berry finish. Initial weight on the front palate creeps up on you to end with surprising length. Cherries, aniseed and charred oak. Soft subtle tannins allow this Nebbiolo to be consumed early; it will be exciting to see how it evolves over time. 1-by-1 branded cork-taint-free cork sealed, 15.0% alcohol -

Vivid light magenta colour that deceptively leads you think “light wine”, but once in the mouth these thoughts are immediately dismissed. Full, savoury palate with underlying floral hints lead on to the normal big tannic finish expected of the variety, adequately countered with enough acid to carry it for many years. Late ripening, always picked last, after all of our other varieties. Alcohol 14.5% -

Light, cherry red colour lures you into thinking a light wine to follow, but what a surprise! Apart from cherry, flavours of raspberry, red-currant and aniseed hints lead on to an extremely elegant palate that immediately hits you with the desirable Nebbiolo characteristic of mouth puckering tannin, particularly after swallowing. Lovely clean acid finish to match. 13.5% alc/vol -

Light brick red colour when poured, but don’t be deceived into thinking this is a lightweight, as the typical floral nose and savoury palate opens into a barrage of fine grained tannins and assertive acidity. Match to a fully ripened surface moulded cheese. 14.5% alc/vol -

Don’t be deceived by the light red, almost pinot-ish colour, compared with the intense crimson of its Shiraz sisters. A powerhouse of typical long, forceful mouth coating tannins on the finish, preceded by a strong aroma of strawberries and a savouriness that lingers forever, including some stone fruit hints. 14.0% alc/volTasting notes by Andrew Caillard, MW – 8th August 2017

A hard act to follow after the praise of the previous two vintages, but this one is up to it. Apart from the expected ‘savouryness’ of Nebbiolo, its acclaim comes from the quality of the tannins. Not monstrous, they just keep on building and drying after you swallow. A very seductive wine – love it! 14.5% alc/volTasting notes by Andrew Caillard, MW – 8th August 2017

A fickle variety, not produced every year. This is one of our best; deep brick-red coloured, lifted floral aromas (rose?) countered by a generous savoury palate and powerful tannic finish, a trademark of the Nebbiolo grape. The lighter colour deceives, as once in the mouth it exerts the hallmarks of the variety – a savoury palate with floral hints and a building, powerfully tannic end. The colour is not as intense as out Shiraz, but in the mouth is has all the hallmarks of the variety ie; savoury characters and a supple, powerful, tannic finish. The 2000 vintage made it’s “debut” at Vinitaly in fair Verona, with much acclaim. This vintage is even better I think; more “Italianate” and certainly with more tannin, which typifies the variety. How long will it live? I don’t know, but I suspect it has a good, long life ahead of it. Only 100 cases made. 14.5% alcoholTasting notes by Andrew Caillard, MW – August 2007

From the noble red grape of Piedmont; relatively rare in Australia. An assertive tannic wine with savoury flavours that fill the mouth, giving hints of floral rose, finishing with earthy/meaty notes. More red than the purple of Shiraz. Will probably live for a long time, but it is still early days. Small quantity, therefore on tasting only and not available for purchase. 14.5% alcoholTasting notes by Andrew Caillard, MW – August 2007
