Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz

The original block of Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz was planted in 1975, with additional vines planted in 1987. Ten hectares of low yielding Shiraz makes this the largest of our production. Fully destemmed, fermented with natural yeasts and kept on skins for 5-6 weeks before a gentle press and into French oak for 12 month maturation.

Cellar or drink now, your choice. 1-by-1 branded cork-taint-free cork sealed, 15.0% alcohol

  • Time of release
Extreme drought preceding the 2020 harvest resulted in a very small vintage of excellent Georgia’s Paddock fruit, which was complemented with the addition of some purchased Heathcote “friends” grapes to produce this blend. Lifted aromas and flavours of complex, mixed ripe red and black berries with typical spiciness. If you can call a 15% alcohol wine elegant, the resulting wine has the expected magenta colour, with the normal fabulous balance between high acidity and supple tannins. Not quite as massive as some previous vintages by deliberately picking slightly earlier, this is delicious now as an ideal match for red meat / duck dishes and also has medium term cellaring capability. 1-by-1 branded cork-taint-free cork sealed. 15.0% alcohol

  • Time of release

Fabulous tannin / acid balance conferring longevity, but imminently approachable now, particularly with a rare steak. Alcohol 15.5%

Another classic example of Georgia’s, from a great year in this district, still grown totally under organic conditions (no artificial chemicals). Typical deep crimson colour. Sweet ripe red berries over an underlying complex spiciness. Lots of extract and viscosity. Plenty of tannin, but still quite accessible now, which is a characteristic of Georgia’s. 14% alcohol. Cellar potential 10 years at least, but delicious now.

Many have been eagerly awaiting the return of this wine after a two year absence. I know you will not be disappointed. Mid-vintage rains have slightly decreased the colour and body of this wine compared to some previous vintages, but it remains a typical “Georgia’s”. Bright crimson red in colour; intense bouquet of spices and ripe berries, integrated with the sweet creamy vanilla of American oak; mouth-filling flavour of spices with great complexity, followed by a long finish with good acid balance. Softer than the ’85 and ’86, it is more comparable to the ’84 (which is now drinking magnificently). Cellar potential 5-8 years but supple and delicious now!

As the name implies, a blend from Georgia’s Paddock fruit and vigneron friends’ fruit. After the restoration of bushfire ravaged Georgia’s Paddock, the vines produced some fruit in the 1988 vintage. Even though about twenty percent of the vines were killed and the balance traumatised, the Georgia’s Paddock crop was superb in quality but insufficient in volume. It was supplemented with a thirty percent addition of Central Victorian Shiraz fruit from Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon (Passing Clouds, Kingower) and Paul Osicka (Osicka’s Vineyards, Graytown) to produce “Georgia & Friends Shiraz” A successful follow-on to the 1987 “Friends Shiraz,” this intense wine shows great depth of complex berry-like flavours and matching up-lifted aromas, with balancing acid and soft American oak tannins. Whilst delicious now, it will amply repay a few years’ bottle maturation. It has sufficient flavour to complement any full-flavoured dish.

Immediately after the fire, many friends offered us small parcels of their premium Shiraz grapes from diverse regions across the central belt of Victoria. These grapes, in roughly equal proportional, were separately vintaged by us at Jasper Hill then blended after twelve months of new American oak maturation to produce a single individual wine. An unrepeatable blend that we are very proud to present, with the appellation “Friends Shiraz” and a red label. The wines show great depth of complex berry fruit aroma, deep magenta colour coupled with balanced acid and soft tannins. Delicious and quite approachable now, although cellaring for a few years is possible. Not Georgia’s Paddock, but a definite Jasper Hill stamp.
